Drywall calculator (sheets)
Add up the wall and ceiling area in square feet, add your waste, divide by the sheet size (4x8 = 32 sq ft, 4x12 = 48 sq ft) and round up. 1,000 sq ft with 10 percent waste is 35 sheets of 4x8.

The formula, in plain words
- 1Area to hang = wall area plus ceiling area, in square feet.
- 2Area with waste = area times (1 plus your waste allowance).
- 3Sheets = area with waste divided by the sheet size: 4x8 = 32 sq ft, 4x10 = 40 sq ft, 4x12 = 48 sq ft.
- 4Round up to whole sheets.
Worked example
1,000 sq ft of walls and ceilings, 10 percent waste, hung in 4x8 sheets.
- 1.Area with waste: 1,000 x 1.10 = 1,100 sq ft.
- 2.Sheets: 1,100 / 32 = 34.375.
- 3.Round up: 35 sheets of 4x8.
- 4.Same job in 4x12: 1,100 / 48 = 22.9, round up to 23 sheets.
Answer: 35 sheets of 4x8 (or 23 sheets of 4x12).
