Acrobat's measuring tool handles distance, perimeter and area, and it does the job for a quick check. But it is one feature inside a full PDF editor: Acrobat Pro is listed at US$19.99 a month on an annual plan, and you are paying for editing, e-signatures and conversion as well. MetreMate is built for one job, measuring PDF plans to price work. It runs in your browser, starts free, and gets you to a first measurement in minutes.

What Adobe Acrobat is genuinely good at

Acrobat is the standard tool for working with PDFs: editing text and images, converting files, filling and signing forms, protecting documents and running reviews with comments. Its measuring tool is solid for the basics too. You can set a scale ratio, snap to endpoints, midpoints and intersections, keep measurements on the PDF as markups, and export them to a CSV file. If your day is spent editing and sending PDFs, Acrobat earns its place.

Why MetreMate is the better tool for measuring plans

In Acrobat, measuring lives under the Measure object tools, and Adobe's help lists three tools: distance, perimeter and area. Each measurement is saved as a comment on the PDF, and the scale ratio is changed from a right-click menu. That works for checking a few dimensions, but it is not built around a takeoff. MetreMate is: open the plan in any browser, set the scale once, then measure lengths, areas, perimeters, counts, angles and arcs as you work through the job. On Pro and Team you can export the marked-up plan as a PDF, PNG or SVG to share. You do not pay for a PDF editor you only use to measure, and you can start free.

Choose Adobe Acrobat if

Choose Adobe Acrobat if you edit, sign and send PDFs every day and only need to measure a plan now and then. The measuring tool is included, so a quick check costs you nothing extra.

Choose MetreMate if

Choose MetreMate if measuring plans to price work is the main thing you do with PDFs. You get a tool built for takeoff, with counts, angles and arcs as well as lengths and areas, in the browser on the computer you already have, and you can start free.
