How do you count drywall sheets from plans?

Drywall sheet count is the number of sheets needed to cover the walls and ceilings, worked out from measured surface area, sheet size and a waste factor. A 4x8 sheet covers 32 sq ft, a 4x10 covers 40 sq ft and a 4x12 covers 48 sq ft. Always round up to whole sheets.

Formula

Sheets = wall and ceiling sq ft x (1 + waste) / sheet sq ft, rounded up

Worked example

1,600 sq ft of wall hung with 4x12 sheets at 10 percent waste.

  1. 1.1,600 x 1.10 = 1,760
  2. 2.1,760 / 48 = 36.7

Order 37 sheets of 4x12.

Measure it in MetreMate

Measure the wall runs in linear feet and multiply by the wall height, and trace ceilings with the Area tool, then apply your waste and sheet size.
