What is a linear foot?

A linear foot (LF) is a straight-line measurement of one foot, 12 inches, along a length, regardless of width or height. Contractors use it for anything bought or installed by length: baseboard, trim, gutters, fence, wall framing, form edge and carpet roll.

Formula

Linear feet = the sum of the run lengths in feet (inches / 12 = feet)

Worked example

A 360 sq ft room carpeted from a standard 12 ft wide roll.

  1. 1.Roll length needed = room area / roll width
  2. 2.360 / 12 = 30 linear feet of roll
  3. 3.30 linear feet x 12 ft wide = 360 sq ft = 40 sq yd

The room takes 30 linear feet of 12 ft roll, before seams and waste.
