What is a roofing square?

A roofing square is 100 sq ft of roof surface. Shingles, underlayment and metal roofing are ordered by the square, and architectural shingles typically come three bundles to the square. Squares are measured on the sloped roof surface, not the flat plan area, so the roof pitch matters.

Formula

Squares = plan area (sq ft) x pitch factor / 100

Worked example

A roof with 2,000 sq ft of plan area at a 6/12 pitch.

  1. 1.Pitch factor at 6/12 = 1.118
  2. 2.2,000 x 1.118 = 2,236 sq ft of roof surface
  3. 3.2,236 / 100 = 22.4 squares

Order 23 squares before waste.

Measure it in MetreMate

Trace the roof plan with the Area tool to get the plan area in square feet, then apply your pitch factor and waste to get squares.
