What is the difference between a square foot and a square yard?

A square foot (sq ft) is the area of a square one foot on each side. A square yard (sq yd) is a square one yard on each side, so 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft. Most US trades measure and price by the square foot; flooring dealers often price carpet by the square yard.

Formula

Square yards = square feet / 9

Worked example

A 360 sq ft bedroom quoted by a carpet dealer per square yard.

  1. 1.360 sq ft / 9 = 40 sq yd

The room is 40 sq yd of carpet before waste.

Measure it in MetreMate
