What is a waste factor in construction?

A waste factor is the percentage added to a measured quantity to cover cuts, offcuts, breakage and mistakes. It is applied after the takeoff: measured quantity x (1 + waste) = order quantity. Simple layouts often take about 10 percent; cut-up roofs and diagonal or herringbone tile take 15 to 20 percent.

Formula

Order quantity = measured quantity x (1 + waste percent / 100)

Worked example

A roof with hips and valleys measured at 22.4 squares.

  1. 1.Waste for hips and valleys: 15 percent
  2. 2.22.4 x 1.15 = 25.76 squares

Order 26 squares.
