How do you measure carpet from a floor plan?

Calibrate with Manual Scale off a dimension you trust, because the takeoff is only as accurate as that scale, and a PDF shrunk to 11 x 17 prints at the wrong scale. How do I convert square feet to square yards?

Divide by 9. One square yard is 9 sq ft, so a 360 sq ft room is 360 / 9 = 40 sq yd. Some stores price carpet per square foot instead, so it helps to keep both numbers on the quote.

How many linear feet of a 12 ft roll do I need?

Divide the square feet by 12 for a starting figure. A 360 sq ft room on a 12 ft roll is 360 / 12 = 30 linear feet of roll, which is 40 sq yd. Treat that as the floor, not the final number. Real rooms need a seam layout, matching pile direction and fill pieces, so lay out the cuts before you quote. Rolls also come in 15 ft and 13 ft 6 in.

How do I plan seams from the plan?

Draw them on the plan. Use the Measure tool to lay out roll drops across each room at your roll width, then mark seam lines and pile direction with the Pencil or Text tool. Put the seam plan on its own layer so it stays separate from the room areas. Everyone in the store then quotes from the same marked-up plan instead of a sketch on a printout.

Count the treads, then measure one tread and riser. Use the Count tool to click each step on the plan or section so the number is on record, and the Measure tool for the stair width.
