MetreMate is browser-based construction takeoff software. US contractors upload a PDF plan, set an architect or engineer scale such as 1/4" = 1'-0", and measure square feet, linear feet, perimeters, counts, angles and arcs on screen. It runs on a Mac or Windows PC with nothing to install, and there is a free plan with no credit card to start.

Updated

  • Imperial units: square feet and linear feet
  • Works with ARCH D (24 x 36 in) and any other PDF sheet size
  • Set scale from the title block or calibrate from a known dimension
  • Runs in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox on a Mac or PC
  • Free plan to start, no credit card
  • Layers to keep each trade or bid item separate

Key facts

UnitsSquare feet and linear feet, plus counts and angles in degrees
Common sheet sizesARCH D 24 x 36 in, ARCH E 36 x 48 in, ARCH C 18 x 24 in, ARCH E1 30 x 42 in
Reduced setsOften printed on 11 x 17 in (tabloid). That is roughly 46 percent of ARCH D, not half, so the printed scale is off: calibrate from a known dimension
Common plan scales1/4" = 1'-0" (1:48) floor plans, 1/8" = 1'-0" (1:96) larger buildings
Site and civil scalesEngineer scales such as 1" = 20' (1:240), also 1" = 10', 30', 40', 50' and 60'
Roofing unit1 roofing square = 100 sq ft of roof surface
Concrete unit1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet; sq ft x (thickness in inches / 12) / 27 = cu yd
Drywall sheets4 x 8 ft = 32 sq ft, 4 x 10 ft = 40 sq ft, 4 x 12 ft = 48 sq ft
Instead ofPrinting full-size sets at FedEx Office or a local blueprint shop and scaling by hand
Runs onA Mac or Windows PC with a modern browser. Nothing to install

Worked example

Example: drywall takeoff for a 12 x 14 ft bedroom with an 8 ft ceiling

  1. Upload the floor plan PDF and set the scale to 1/4" = 1'-0".
  2. Trace the room with the Perimeter tool: 52 linear feet of wall.
  3. Multiply by the 8 ft ceiling height: 52 x 8 = 416 sq ft of wall. Trace the ceiling with the Area tool: 168 sq ft.
  4. Total 584 sq ft. Add 10 percent waste for a simple room: 642 sq ft.
  5. Divide by 32 sq ft per 4 x 8 sheet: 20.1, so order 21 sheets. Deduct large openings if you want a tighter count.

21 sheets of 4 x 8 drywall for a 12 x 14 ft room with 8 ft ceilings at 10 percent waste.
